12,000 people took part in this year’s Equality March in Krakow! It was a show of solidarity, dancing, and extraordinary – as emphasized by the event organizer, the Queer May Association.
We will soon be celebrating two decades of the Equality March in Krakow, which between 2004 and 2010 was called the Tolerance March. It is therefore one of the oldest marches in Poland. Since 2015, the march has been organized by the Queer May Association. Today, the march has become a permanent fixture in Krakow’s calendar of events, changing as the people who co-create it change. And as the LGBTQIA community in the city changes.
“The march is a day of joy, community, and fun, but every year we also remind people that Poland is the most homophobic country in the European Union, where queer people do not feel safe. In all this evil, however, we have each other, we organize ourselves from the bottom up. Because solidarity is always and everywhere our strength” – emphasizes Queer May, which this year invited the residents of Krakow to a “cosmic, mind-blowing” party.
For the third time, the Equality March was held under the honorary patronage of the Mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majchrowski, and for the first time under the patronage of the European Commission Representation in Poland. Not only was the number of participants historic, but also the number of platforms – four, two of which were sponsored by Cisco for the first time.
The event began after 3 p.m. at the National Museum, proceeded through the streets of the city via the Main Market Square, and returned to the Museum before 6 p.m.
In the evening, the Poczta Główna club will host an official after-party, prepared in cooperation with the local Ukrainian collective Tres Bienski.
