Conference on equal urban policies

Should Krakow address anti-discrimination issues in the context of the LGBT community? Are there openly LGBT employees working in the city hall? On March 5, we will discuss this topic at the Krakow City Hall with local government officials from all over Poland.

In recent years, there has been an increasing talk about local governments having the tools and opportunities to support discriminated minorities and organizations working for equality and diversity at the local level. More and more cities see the value in this support and are implementing programs and strategies addressing these issues into their urban policies. How does this look in Krakow? Apart from the recently announced fight against hate speech, should we pay attention to more decisive actions? The Queer May Association and Krakow City Councilor Nina Gabryś cordially invite you to the City Hall on March 5 for the conference “Rainbow Krakow: Local Policies and Equality Solutions.” “It is important that lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people feel safe in our city. We are glad that Krakow is taking action to combat hate speech, but it is worth considering how to actually take care of minority and discriminated groups. What would make us happiest? If, after the conference, city representatives unanimously agree that supporting equality pays off,” says Artur Maciejewski, president of the Queer May Association.

Among the invited guests were Marek Szolc, councilor of the capital city of Warsaw, and Bartłomiej Ignaszewski, councilor of Poznań. The Krakow City Council will be represented by, among others, Ewa Całus, director of the Education Department at the Krakow City Hall, and Alicja Szczepańska, councilor of the city of Krakow. The conference will be opened by Andrzej Kulig, Deputy Mayor of Krakow for Social Policy, followed by a presentation on the Tri-City Model for Equal Treatment by Barbara Borowiak, Deputy Inspector for Equal Treatment in the Social Development Department of the Gdańsk City Council.

“We are delighted that so many distinguished guests have accepted our invitation and that we will have the opportunity to discuss the creation of a truly open and friendly Krakow for all. The exchange of experiences between different cities in the field of equality policy is crucial, and I hope that the joint debate will give us a lot of inspiration for action. The interest and willingness to attend on the part of the city council shows that we all recognize the need for action in this direction,” comments Nina Gabryś, Krakow City Councilor.

Krakow City Hall (Pl. Wszystkich Świętych), in the Stanisław Wyspiański Hall of the Krakow City Council, March 5, 2019, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
